OUR HISTORY
RGE began manufacturing chair bases in the 1980s, contracted to develop a plastic alternative to an aluminium chair base that would be just as strong. The base had to pass BIFNA specifications. RGE researched to find a suitable material to meet the design, strength, cosmetic, processability, and competitiveness criteria.
A combination of reduced weight and more competitive materials had to be found in order to penetrate the market. There was no guarantee that the market would accept a plastic base, but RGE championed this forward thinking and innovative idea.

The only way to test the market was to lay down a full production tool. After a long period of testing, RGE atained certification to demonstrate that the plastic bases were as strong as pressure die cast bases, and production began.
RGE made special purpose equipment to monitor bases from each batch. As orders increased, RGE had to lay down duplicate tools and began to ship bases all over the world, finding success in the USA which led to the purchase of a site in Tennessee to set up a production facility closer to the end user. Once larger companies gained confidence in plastic bases, they were keen to have their own designs.
Through the 1990s RGE worked with larger companies globally, producing bases, designs, and tooling. We have manufactured in excess of 100 million bases within the group, since introducing plastic bases to the office chair market. Plastic bases now outsell aluminium bases 4:1.
